From Huffington Post:

Arianna Huffington and Edward Norton see a solution to America’s job crisis in nonprofit organizations.

The President and Editor-in-Chief of the Huffington Post Media Group and the critically-acclaimed actor spoke with HuffPost Live’s Alicia Menendez Tuesday about the JobRaising Challenge. The challenge is a nonprofit job-creation initiative organized by The Huffington Post, the Skoll Foundation, Crowdrise and Knowledge Partner McKinsey & Company. Norton is the co-founder of Crowdrise, an online fundraising site.

The competition will award the top three employment-boosting nonprofit organizations that raise the most money through Crowdrise. With $250,000 in prizes at stake, the applicant pool has been narrowed down to about 70 nonprofits from more than 200 original entrants, Huffington said.

“We wanted to demonstrate that not-for-profits are also job-creators,” she said, describing how charities are known for their social causes rather than their workforce.

Huffington points to finalist organizations such as Girls Who Code, which helps teen girls pursue career opportunities in engineering and technology, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Of America, which provides services for returning vets and their families.

Huffington and Norton also emphasized how the competition allows anyone to help address the nation’s unemployment crisis by supporting these organizations.

“Unemployment and job creation is a very ephemeral idea for many people,” Norton said. “They understand what employment is, but as an issue that they can address, most people don’t feel that its something they can play an individual role in.”

From Contactmusic:

Actor and activist Edward Norton is calling on his friends and fans to join him and make a stand against gun violence as America continues to mourn the lives lost in the Connecticut school shooting last month (Dec 12, 2012).

The Fight Club star has signed an online petition from non-profit organisation Sandy Hook Promise, pledging to honour the 20 children and six staffmembers gunned down at Newtown’s Sandy Hook Elementary School by encouraging and participating in conversations about how to make schools and communities a safer place as legislators discuss how to tackle the growing numbers of gun-related crimes and murders across the country.

Posting a link to the page on his Twitter.com blog on Monday (14 Jan, 2013), he writes, “I’m joining people in Newtown in making the sandyhookpromise to protect our children & reduce gun violence. Join us at http://www.sandyhookpromise.org.”

Norton’s rallying call comes just a day before U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is due to present his proposals for comprehensive gun violence legislation to President Barack Obama on Tuesday (15 Jan, 2013).

The actor isn’t the only celebrity to speak out about the need for gun reform – Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon and Gwyneth Paltrow are among the stars who recorded a special video message for Demand a Plan, a new movement which seeks to ban the sale of assault weapons, among other things.

The Newtown massacre is the latest tragedy to rock America in recent years, following shootings at Colorado’s Columbine High School in 1999, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2007, and a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado in July (12).

From Baltimore Sun:

Mozilla Firefox has challenged fundraisers to step it up over the holidays, offering $100,000 to the one who can bring in the most money through Jan. 10.

Baltimore-born Edward Norton is running 5th, having raised — as of early this week — more than $27,000 for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, an environmental organization working to protect the region’s ecosystems.

In first place is Jimmy Kimmel, who’d brought in more then $41,000 for Comfort the Children, a group that does work in Kenya.

Norton has been sweetening the pot by offering prizes to donors. For instance, for the biggest giver between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, was to get a poster of “The 25th Hour” signed by him and Spike Lee.

Before that, someone won his director’s megaphone from “Keeping the Faith.” Anyone who gives at least $29 by Jan. 11 has a chance to win an online chat with Norton and an iPad mini that he signed.

Here’s what Norton has to say about why he chose that cause:

“I can see why people would say, ‘Why work on something so far from home in such an exotic and remote place?’ or ‘What do the Maasai people and African wildlife and wilderness have to do with our lives and our challenges?'” he wrote.

“My answer is that every day we learn more about how interconnected the natural systems on the planet are and recognize even more clearly that we all rely on healthy ecosystems to support our lives … even ones that are far away from where we live.”
